The McLaren 570s was a car that set our hair on fire when we tested it late in 2016. It looked fantastic, it was shockingly fast, and driving inside the cabin really did give off that race car element. Frankly, we were very sad to see it go.

Stumbling on into the middle of  2017 and McLaren have released the convertible version of this beautiful monster, Dubbed the McLaren 570S Spider. Not much has changed regarding chassis and drivetrain, it still features 3.8-litre twin turbocharged V8, putting out lots and lots of kW’S – 420 of them to be exact. The McLaren 570S Spider also retains a carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis which brings a multitude of benefits such as a reduction in weight and strength. 

The biggest changes then, as you have probably guessed is the folding roof. This roof entirely disappears into the rear of the McLaren and can be operated at up to 40km/h and will fully open or close within 15 seconds. With the roof up, the 570s spider has around 50-litres of luggage space in the rear and 150-litres up front.

Performance

The only other difference is that McLaran has included an extended rear spoiler to aid with aerodynamics.This helps to keep the 570s spider on the same performance levels as the Coupe variant. Talking of performance, the numbers all seem to be identical to the Coupe, the only change being the spider will take an extra 0.1 seconds to 200km/h. Thus which is probably because it is 58kg heavier. Top speed with the roof in place is 328km/h, this drops to 315km/h with the roof down.

As I’m sure you are aware, there is a host of benefits to owning a convertible supercar. From windswept hair as you, your wife and your V8 thunder through the South African countryside to making your face more visible as you drive meticulously slowly down Camps Bay Drive. Either way, the McLaren 570S Spider remains a beautiful car.

South Africans rejoice! New Volkswagen Polo has been revealed!

New Volkswagen Polo revealed!

If there’s a car we as South Africans love besides the Toyota Hilux, is the Volkswagen Polo. For years this model has been part of the top 3 selling cars in the country. This doesn’t seem to be a South African thing though, because over 14 million Polo’s have been sold worldwide. Now the new version has been revealed and it looks more premium and larger than the car it replaces.

What’s new?

Besides the exterior and interior looks, the new Polo makes use of new engines ranging from a 1.0 litre to a 2.0 TSI which will be fitted in the new Polo GTI.  In between the entry level and the flagship, there is also a 1.5 TSI engine which will probably be the pick of the bunch for many people as it develops 110kW. The most interesting development is the inclusion of a 1.0 TGI engine which will run on natural gas. Diesels have not been left out as two 1.6 TDI engines will also make their way into the range. Things aren’t clear yet if we will have the full complement of engines available in South Africa, but we can be sure that the majority of engines offered will make their way to our shores.

Tech fiesta:

Volkswagen aims to make the new Polo more premium, so features like Active Info Display will be available in the model. Other impressive additions like Adaptive Cruise Control, Park Assist and even Wireless Charging for smart-phone users will make the Polo a very impressive offering for buyers looking for a technologically inclined vehicle.  The technology doesn’t stop at entertainment as a host of safety features have been added, such as Pedestrian Monitoring and City Emergency Breaking. Other tech features we’ve fallen in love with such as Apple CarPlay will remain thankfully.

Overall:

The new Volkswagen Polo will be available in Trendline, Comfortline, Highline and of course GTI variant. LED Daytime Running  Lights come standard in each variant, which is good because some of the competition now offers the same feature from a lighting perspective. The aesthetic appeal of the new Polo is quite a change compared to the current model we’re used to. Volkswagen has always been more aggressive in the changes made to each new Polo, unlike the Golf which has remained quite similar for the last three models. We can only imagine dealers will be abuzz when the car lands in South Africa soon. Stay tuned for more information regarding specific details surrounding this new Volkswagen Polo.

From when I was little, the Porsche 911 has always been one of my favourite cars. I am unsure of where my love came for this brand, but it may have started when I was shoved in the front loading area or “trunk” by my father. This was his way of demonstrating the ample space available. Come to think of it, I’ve been pretty Claustrophobic since then… For a period of time, I did fall out of this love affair as I felt Porsche went through a funny design stage which I didn’t really like.

In recent years though my love affair has been reignited due to some of the drop-dead gorgeous cars coming out of the Porsche Factory. Yesterday this feeling became even more potent with the unveiling the Porsche 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series. In short, it’s a more powerful, more luxurious and limited production 911 Turbo S. Could this be one of the prettiest Porsches ever?

500 models will be produced featuring an exclusive golden yellow metallic finish and various carbon fibre components such as the front trunk lid, roof, and side skirts. Contrasting with the unique golden paint are two exposed Carbon Fibre strips running the length of the vehicle. Other exterior colours are available, but I think you will agree that this specific colour looks very special. My favourite exterior feature is the alloy wheel design, its large central design with thin spokes branching off and featuring a golden edge looks exquisite, possibly one of the prettiest alloy wheel designs out there.

The interior follows the same theme with golden yellow accents on interior elements such as the Alcantara roof and seats. Carbon Fibre trims have integrated fine copper thread which emphasises this car’s exclusivity and sheer class. These subtle features make for a fantastic cabin which I would not mind spending many a weekend in. You can’t drive a car like this to work every day, can you? Only if you want your employees to demand a raise.

Apart from the Exclusive Series striking design and styling elements, it also features more power than a standard Porsche 911 Turbo S with 447 kW (607 bhp)  and 750 Nm of Torque on tap. An increase of around 20 kW. This results in a 0 – 100 km/h time of 2.8 seconds and a 0 – 200km/h of just 9.8 seconds with a top speed of 330 km/h. Pretty fast.

The Porsche Exclusive Series can also be experienced when away from the vehicle, with the optional five-piece luggage set costing $6000. Further to this, a custom titanium watch can also be ordered which will tie in and match the colour and design of your Porsche, a price for this has yet to be determined.

Imagine a vehicle custom built just for you. A car designed with your taste in mind, featuring the items you desire whilst doing without the items which hold no value for your needs. Now imagine the manufacturer producing your personal masterpiece was non-other than Rolls-Royce – a company who build cars with a quality and luxury that is second to none.

This, for many, is the stuff of dreams. For one particular Rolls Royce client, its reality, and this reality holds the name “Sweptail”.

This idea started back in 2013 when a very special Rolls-Royce client approached the firm with a proposal to make a one-off luxury vehicle just for him. The client wanted a two- seater coach built coupe with a large panoramic roof and drew inspiration from yachts and golden era cars from the early 20th century. This really is a beautiful, pristine masterpiece using the finest materials on offer.

There are many features to swoon over but a personal favourite is the custom Carbon Fibre briefcase covered in matching Sweptail leather. This case won’t be sitting in the passenger footwell, it will fit into its own compartment located in the body of the vehicle behind the opening of the doors. Similar to that of the Umbrella storage which Rolls-Royces are renowned for.

Are vehicles like this the future of the luxury car?

It is just not good enough anymore to have a luxury vehicle such as a Phantom or Dawn. Over the past few years, we have seen manufacturers offering more levels of personalization and custom options.  It was only a matter of time that a vehicle like the Rolls Royce Sweptail would appear on the scene. We could be seeing more custom built, one-off luxury Rolls Royces in the future as there is interest from other special clients to invest in this one-0ff idea. At $13 Million dollars or R167 Million Rand, the Rolls-Royce Sweptail is the most expensive car ever sold, this really is a vehicle for the very tiny percentage of the world.

South African Car News: BMW 2 Series Facelift

The task of face lifting a vehicle is a tricky one, you see, give the patient a completely new face and you just damn all owners of the current model by throwing their resale value out the proverbial window, but tweak a light and add a paintjob and a rimjob here and there and you’re basically just wasting everyone’s time. So, how has BMW done, then, with the facelifted 2 Series and M2?

Not an ugly car at all, the 2 Series still has quite a bit of longevity in its frisky yet elegant lines, however, in true BMW fashion, while only minor, the updates make quite the difference when all added together. This isn’t to say that the 2 Series was designed with faults or bits that might age more than others, but the LCI (Life-cycle Impulse) which is just BMW speak for facelift, gives the manufacturer a chance to improve aspects of the vehicle which they feel consumers may or may not have asked for. So, without turning this into an essay, the following are changes which one can expect on the 90210ed BMW 2 Series and M2 models.

  •  New headlight and taillight clusters incorporating redesigned LED signatures and varying trim options ie: blacked out surrounds etc. and LED lighting as standard
  • Redesigned, wider kidney grill
  • Larger lower air-intakes on the front bumper
  •  Three new colours, namely: Mediterranean Blue and Seaside Blue, as well as a Beverley Hills appropriate Sunset Orange. Buyers can now choose from 12 colours – what a time to be alive!
  • 16, 17 and 18-inch wheels are now available across the ​range with Jet Black and Bicolour Jet Black wheels now available, bringing the number of rim options to 17.
  • A redesigned and more pronounced instrument cluster which is more driver-focussed (as opposed to passenger focussed?)

  • Upgraded and more premium interior finishes which just further enhance the premium feel within the cabin of the 2 Series and M2, including upgraded materials and chrome bits.
  • The latest version of iDrive can also be found on derivatives specced with the Navigation Professional system, this going hand in hand with the new 8.8-inch touchscreen display.
  • WiFi connectivity for up to 10 devices and a wireless phone charger

The engine line-up is set to remain the same as the current line-up with petrol and diesel engines ranging from 135 kW and 270 N.m in the 220i to 250 kW and 500 N.m in the M240i. The M2, too, remains unchanged, churning out 272 kW and 465 N.m (500 N.m on overboost) from its TwinPower 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six motor.
So then, have BMW succeeded in maintaining resale values while giving the range a worthwhile refresh? Well, the facelifted 2 Series launches overseas in July 2017 so expect local availability towards the second half of 2017 – then we’llbe able to answer that question!

You may not know of the new car company called “NIO” and this would come as no surprise. They are a global production car start-up specializing in premium electric vehicles, and when I say premium, I mean 1% of the world kind of premium. They claim to have brought together the worlds leading people in automotive technology in over 8 locations worldwide.

Usually, an automotive company would ease themselves into the industry, maybe producing a mediocre vehicle and building from there, but not NIO, their recently produced hypercar just beat every production car record around the “green hell” or Nürburgring – an infamous testing ground for automotive manufacturers – with a time of 6min 45 seconds.

This might not sound like a big deal, it was going to get broken, until you release that the NIO EP9 is an all-electric hypercar with world-leading technology and performance. This is staggering for a company we haven’t ever heard off.

The details of the NIO EP9

Power is produced by four electric motors producing a total of 1 Megawatt of power or in terms we know – 1 000 kW. Being electric, it produces instantaneous torque of 1480 Nm at each motor which means a combined 6 334 Nm at the wheels – these peak figures are available anywhere in the 7 500rpm range. Power is delivered through four electric motors and gearboxes featured at each corner of the car, along with a revolutionary braking system capable of producing more braking torque than a GT3-Spec racing car.

Helping the NIO EP9 reach this staggering lap time from a company with no motor racing heritage is of course aerodynamics. The EP9 is a car that features a 3-stage rear active wing and a full-length floor diffuser meaning it can produce twice the downforce of a current F1 car and has the ability to corner with 3g’s of lateral force.

This type of technology means a 0-200 km/h time of just 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 313 km/h. The EP9 has a claimed range of over 400 km with an interchangeable battery system taking only 8 minutes to swap. One battery has a charge time of 45 minutes. This is all very impressive, but we doubt one would achieve 400 km range while doing 0-200 km/h runs…

There are currently 7 EP9’s that have been produced with NIO planning to produce another 10. Cost: $1,4m – I told you it was premium.

Whenever a new Golf is launched, there is excitement beyond belief. First and foremost, it’s been widely regarded as the benchmark in its class and for good reason. Its brilliant! Whether you are starting a new job, transporting kids to and from school, or want a car so that you can have space for your grandkids, it’s the best all-rounder and has remained that way for the last couple of decades. The latest version, or “facelift” in normal terms may be a slight improvement on the current Golf 7, but those small changes make for strides in comfort, luxury and of cause, sportiness.

We flew out to Port Elizabeth to sample the latest version and more specifically, the GTI and my oh my. It’s like your hot friend that was already a looker but decided to go and get a trainer  for a full year, and has come back looking like a model for GQ magazine.

The changes to the new  VW Golf 7.5 GTI are small, but they certainly make you notice it. The “GTI Line” in red now gets broken up and hugs the new LED headlights. Traces of the honeycomb grille finish off the bottom of the LEDs and give the eyes a more aggressive look. The front and rear bumper have also been tweaked for a sportier appeal with the cherry on top being  the new lights with progressive indicators. Small changes as mentioned, but overall, a more svelte athlete.

In the interior, you are immediately greeted by the new LCD electronic display in the instrument binacle which can be adjusted to suit. The examples that we sampled featured  the Discover Pro Navigation, in which the maps and directions sit right in between the rev counter and tachometer for easy viewing. The Discover Pro Navigation also comes with a 9.2-inch screen for vehicle operation with full touch and gesture control. With my basketball player hands, I couldn’t master the system but my driving partner, being a lady with lady like hands, operated the system with ease and I’m sure that with enough practice, I’d soon get the hang of it. The system is iPhone ready with Apple CarPlay and is as easy as 1,2,3 to use. Android Auto has been enabled but South Africans will have to wait until their phones are ready, as the software on android devices has not been enabled yet.

We drove the cars from the airport and stopped over in Jansenville for some lunch. This was a  relatively short drive, thanks to the uprated 169 kW instead of the current 162 kW from the familiar 2.0-litre TFSI motor. Torque has stayed the same at 350 N.m but the vehicle feels more peppy and angrier than what the figures suggest. The GTI 7.5, as it’s locally known, has no problem with bumpier roads, even at more  illegal speeds and turns in like a GTI should. Seats are just the right mix of sporty and let’s-drive-to-Cape-Town-this-weekend comfortable. Even though I have a back that could have come from a 95-year-old war veteran, not once did I reach for the Myprodol.

After reaching the venue and reflecting on the very short drive of 247 kilometers, we settled in and I tried to find fault with the VW Golf 7.5 GTI as there must be at least one black mark and yes, I did find it. It no longer comes with a manual gearbox! The urban warriors having to deal with Sandton traffic have got to VW and convinced them that the manual was redundant and only DSG boxes are on the cards for sunny South Africa. Train smash for a stubborn mule like myself but in the long run, it’s the better decision.

With the whole range being refreshed, it called for some engine changes as well. The 1.2 TSI has been dropped in favour of the new 1.0 TSI in both Trendline and Comfortline packages. This motor should be very nimble at 81 kW and 200 N.m of torque. Next is the 1.4 TSI with the same torque figure but with a bit more juice at 92 kW. This has the option of the DSG gearbox and I’m sure from a comfort, power and pricing perspective, this will be the pick of the bunch. Next would be the GTI and added from July will be the GTD – the 130 kW & 350 N.m diesel 2.0 TDI, as well as the R version. We weren’t given the exact figures for the R but expect more from the flagship Vrrpha!

Once again, the standard has been set and to be honest, many cars will run the Golf close and one or two will be faster, but none can come close to what the Golf and specifically the  VW Golf 7.5 GTI can offer as an everyday package. Expect it to stand head and shoulders above the competition.

2017 HONDA CIVIC TYPE R SETS NEW FRONT-WHEEL DRIVE LAP RECORD AT NURBURGRING

When we were given the chance to sample the Honda Civic Type R last year, we were all completely astounded by how engaging and raw it was. What Honda had created was a sheer masterpiece in front-wheel drive performance and bore little resemblance to Nora, Albert, Rita and the rest of the bridge club’s favourite runabout – the Honda Civic. Sure you could spot a Civic somewhere beneath the garish wing and blacked out wheels, but these two cars really could not have been further apart. Not only did this vehicle find favour with just about everyone who drove it, it also set an astounding lap time around the Nordschleife, beating the previous FWD champion and setting a blistering time of 07:50.63.

Here we are in 2017 and having had its trophy snatched away by the Golf GTI Clubsport S in 2016, the Type R has returned with a vengeance. Featuring the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor found in the previous generation Civic Type R, the unit now produces 236 kW but the same 400 N.m as before, all this thanks to a bit of an ECU tune and a snazzy new exhaust which actually makes it sound a bit like a 5-pot, mmmmm. You can have a listen to that at the end of this video.

The new chassis also means an increase in torsional rigidity of an impressive 38% and the torsional beam rear setup of the old Type R is gone, having now been replaced by an independent, multi-link system. What this brings to the tea party is much improved stability and control at speed, as well as a lower, wider and longer wheelbase.

Having set a record time of 07:43.80, it is clear that all of those little upgrades have done their job – it shaved some 3 seconds off the time of the Clubsport S.

Now all that’s left to do is wait for it to arrive in South Africa which should be during the course of 2018. So, in what colour will you be having yours, then?

We at The Motorist love a good wagon and the only thing we love more than a wagon is a wagon that can do more than just carry things and look cool. Take the Audi RS6 for instance – not only does it look tit, it’ll also give many super car owners a serious fright, all while carrying a moth eaten lamp and a hound or two – it’s brilliant! Unfortunately for us wagon lovers, South African buyers seem to have a penchant for crossovers and as a result, there are very few wagons on sale here. Motoring journalists left, right and centre can’t praise the station wagon enough, but hey, what do we know?

Luckily for us, the king of wagon makers has decided that while there might not be much of a market in South Africa for the V90, the Cross Country variants have always seemed to do quite well here and as such, the V90 Cross Country will be on sale here. Both Mercedes-Benz and Audi make raised versions of their big wagons, namely The Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain and Audi A6 Allroad, but the E-Class will not be making its way here and the A6 Allroad is no longer on sale in SA. So what does that mean for the V90 Cross Country?

Well, it doesn’t really have any competition in its own segment…but even if it did, it would have little to worry about. It’s gorgeous. Like, properly good looking and for some reason, the black plastic bits and rugged additions to the 90 Cluster’s sleek and luxurious lines come together really nicely. You get the feeling that rather than jacking up the ride-height and forgetting to paint a few bits, the V90 CC’s designers have thought long and hard about what the buyer wants, and how they can provide them with this in a typically Volvo fashion.

The first crossover to be based on Volvo’s SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform, the V90 CC promises a blend of off-road capability, but, in a “most elegant, sophisticated, tailored wagon suit.” The very words of Thomas Ingenlath, the man responsible for the recent spate of automotive pornography coming out of Sweden.

Interior trims differ to those on offer in the rest of the 90 Cluster with trim options such us Black Walnut for that manly and rugged look. Grrr.

A nice option to tick is the unique Adventure Pack which has been created especially for South African Buyers and offers a host of lifestyle-oriented extras, bristling with value. Included in the Adventure Pack are, amongst others, the panoramic 360-degree surround view camera, auto-dimming mirrors all-round, integrated compass, powered folding rear seats, air suspension and the 230V power outlet – all geared towards improving those out-of-town weekend adventures and typical holiday drives through the country.

Pricing for the Volvo V90 Cross Country starts at R770 900 for the T5 Geartronic AWD Momentum and stretches to a not too heady R921 300 for the T6 Geartronic AWD Inscription. All models come standard with a 5-year/100 000 km vehicle warranty, full maintenance plan and roadside assistance, as well as ant-smash and grab glass and Tracker connect as standard.

The new Volvo V90 Cross Country range begins at R770 900 for the T5 Geartronic AWD Momentum, and ends with the T6 Geartronic AWD Inscription at R921 300.

Is the glorious noise gone? Jaguar F-Type now comes in 2.0 litre variant.

So by now you would’ve heard that the F-Type will feature an entry level 2.0 litre engine. For those of you who love cars, you may be worried. The thing about a sports car like an F-Type is that the silly things are often what matters most. So yes the car may be lighter and yes it may love the trees a bit more, but will it still sound like you’re a superhero each time you plant your foot down? Let’s hope so. The F-Type was part of the cars that made the “pop and bangs” popular. Some call it “fake noises” but we really don’t care, because a screaming F-Type on overrun is as aurally pleasing as a Jimmy Hendrix solo.

Performance Figures

As much as noise counts though, we have to give credit where it’s due. The 2.0 litre F-Type still offers great performance credentials, as it produces 221kW/400Nm. As a result it’s good for a 0-100 time of 5.7 seconds. The fact that the car is lighter also means that it will be more dynamic which generally means more fun. The introduction of this power-plant makes sense, as it makes the vehicle more accessible. By accessible we don’t mean from a monetary aspect, but rather from a drivers perspective. Sometimes less is more and in the case of the F-Type 2.0 litre, this perhaps could be the reality. Not everyone can man-handle a V6 or V8 F-Type with the grace of a Top Gear presenter, in fact majority people aren’t too interested in lap times and going sideways. The sledge hammer performance offered by the top of the range F-Type can be a bit intimidating, especially for someone who simply wants something the stylish and sporty. As a result the 2.0 litre variant may just be the car that client is looking for.

Jaguar insists that vehicle still sounds great and from the small clips we’ve heard, it still has the pops on overrun. Joy. The F-Type’s new Ingenium engine has some smart technology which aids performance and fuel economy. This includes a specialised exhaust manifold, a clever valve system, a twin scroll turbocharger and centrally mounted fuel injectors.  The changes don’t stop with the engine, as subtle front and rear end tweaks have been made, giving the F-Type a fresher face.

Overall this new model can be viewed as “the people’s Jag”. One can also expect to pay less for this model but we  have yet to receive formal pricing on the car in South Africa. Until we drive it and hear how sounds, we’re holding thumbs. We smell a Porsche 718 Boxter/Cayman dual happening soon with this car. Stay tuned.
