Toyota’s New Updated Hilux

South Africa’s best selling bakkie has received a facelifted and refresher, promising to make the Hilux range even more compelling to the buyer and taking the fight to the Ford Ranger, VW’s Amarok and new contenders like Isuzu’s upcoming D-Max and new BT-50.

2021 Toyota Hilux: Whats New?

Externally the front-end revisions include a new headlight design that’s sleeker and slime than that of before, with a new front bumper and grille design. The Top-spec 2.8GD-6 Raider now features Bi-LED Headlamps with integrated LED turn signals. with the lesser 2.4 GD-6 featuring Halogens with LED fog lamps. The Legend variants get a larger black trapezoidal front grille design with three-dimensional elements and boomerang-shaped foglamps fixed to the new bumper guard. The look overall is more imposing with the black dark plating over the headlamps making the bakkie look rather menacing The GR-Sport and Legend 50 Models will fall away replaced by the Legend and Legend RS. The Lesser S, SR models will also remain with only the SRX being replaced with the Raider “Raised Body” nomenclature carrying through.

2021 Toyota Hilux: Specification

Possibly the largest improvement over the outgoing model is the improvements to the bakkies standard equipment. The 2.4GD-6 now featuring the enlarged Multi-Information Display (MID), Park Distance Control. A new 8-inch centre-mounted infotainment system, with physical buttons touch buttons, handles the connectivity and entertainment. Updates to the system now include faster software and screen haptic feedback but also the all-important Carplay and Andriod Auto integration in the raider and Legend models. The Legend will gain black roof liner, leather upholstery and a 9-speaker JBL Premium Sound System with dash integrated speaker system, featuring an 800W 8-channel amplifier and CLARi-Fi sound clarity technology. Toyota Connect with 15GB of data comes standard for in-car WIFI connectivity.

2021 Toyota Hilux: Safety

Benefiting from the advancements in Toyota’s Saftey Sense (TSS), the updated Hilux will now gain Lane Departure Waring assist, Pre Collision Warning and Adaptive Radar guided Cruise Control. The 2.4GD-6 also gains side curtain airbags.

2021 Hilux: Drivetrains

The same engines will power the Hilux range with the offering of two diesels and petrol offerings. The 2.4GD-6 remains mostly unchanged, and produces the same 110kW and 400Nm, while the 2.8GD-6 turbo diesel has been revised and tuned to make 150kW and 500Nm. The petrol offerings produce the same outputs, with the 2.7litre’s peak power rated at 112kw and 240Nm and 173kW and 375Nm of torque from the 4.0Litre V6. The GD engines are available with either a 6-Speed Manual or 6-Speed Automatic, with the 2.7litre petrol coming in a 5-Speed manual exclusively. The 4.0Litre V6 is linked to the Automatic exclusively.

2021 Hilux: Pricing

Available from Mid-October, Hilux models have a 3-year/100,000 km warranty and 90,000 km service plan with 10 000Km Intervals.
