Peugeot-Citroen SA to take over Local Opel distribution and announces new Corsa
PCSA announced that it has become the official distributor of Opel vehicles in South Africa with effect from the 1st of January 2021. The alignment was anticipated with the global company having acquired Opel. Both brands now form part of the newly launched Stellantis Group with 14 car brands under its umbrella. For us locally it suggests the support of the PCSA dealer network will now support the Opel brand and its products like the new PCSA based Corsa.
New Opel Corsa Range
The first Opel model launched by PCSA local is the all-new Opel Corsa, which sports an entirely new look compared with the outgoing model. Compared to the outgoing model, the new Corsa has lost up to 10 per cent of weight, translating into a curb weight of 980 kilograms. It is about 108 kg less than the car it replaces, even though they are roughly the same size. The new Corsa is 4.06 meters long, with a boot capacity of 309 litres, increasing the outgoing model of 10%. There is just one engine and gearbox combination available across the range. The engine is a 1.2-litre naturally-aspirated 3-cylinder, and in this application, it produces 55 kW and 118 Nm. The vehicle is front-wheel driven, and the gearbox on offer is a 5-speed manual. Opel is claiming 4.2 L/100 km in terms of fuel economy, and the new Corsa has a 40-litre fuel tank.
Opel Corsa: Spec and trim levels
There are two levels of trim; Edition and Elegance. Edition rides on 15-inch wheels, while Elegance boasts attractive 16-inch alloys. Edition level of trim features daytime running lights, air conditioning, rear park distance control, USB port, Bluetooth, auto lights, power steering, cruise control, and cloth upholstery. Elegance adds Partial Cloth + Artificial Leather trim, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, panoramic roof, auto wipers, and a rear parking camera. In terms of connectivity, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay has been fitted. The range will expand to include a turbocharged variant and automatic depending on local demand and pricing. PCSA will realise further details in due course with delays to an official launch attributed to Covid-19. An OPC variant may join the line-up, but performance buffs will be saddened to know it will only feature 100kWs making it ration mild and much like the GSI of the older generation.
Opel Corsa: Interior Design
The design of the cockpit features a driver-oriented instrument panel. The controls of the interior are laid out based on the principle of functional grouping and cognitive ergonomics. The new Corsa will also debut several advanced safety features.
Opel Corsa: Price in South Africa
Interestingly the Corsa has been in dealers since late 2020, with no launch officially little interest has been drawn as a result. Pricing starts at R290 000 for the entry-level Edition model.
Opel Corsa 1.2 Edition R290 000
Opel Corsa 1.2 Elegance R350 000
The new Opel Corsa is sold with a 3-year/ 120 000 km warranty and a 3-year/60 000 km service plan.
