All-new 2020 Hyundai Grand i10 lands in SA!

TheMotorist’s Khanye Ngwenya recently attended the launch of the all-new Grand i10 B-Segment offering from Hyundai. Set to be a compelling offer with much to offer the buyer, its entry will prove difficult with the likes of the Toyota Starlet, and the ever-popular VW Polo Vivo has main rivals. With the “Don’t fix what’s not broken” approach, the grand i10 should take an already compelling offer and enhance the consumer value proposition, and this way make it an exciting offering to the segment.

2020 Hyundai Grand i10: Interior

With connectivity an essential focus for buyers in the automotive space, the range now features a 6.2-inch touch screen infotainment system with CarPlay and Andriod Auto as standard. Two standard USB ports are available to the front passengers, with one mounted within the infotainment and the other lower down specifically for phone charging in the centre console. The Top-spec Fluid models feature synthetic leatherette seat upholstery with contrasting rear stitching, Multi-function steering wheel and rear folding rear seating offering a 60:40 split. The interior space is roomy and feels as it should in a vehicle of this size, the large windows allow for good visibility which should aid the sometimes new to the road buyer of the A and B-segment. There is a fair bit of hard and unfriendly plastics in the interior, but they do feel like some thought has been placed into making them friendly to the touch they indeed look. Plenty clever storage cubbies and compartments make the interiors rather generous dimensions useful for the typical stowage needed.

2020 Hyundai Grand i10: Styling and exterior

With respects to the looks department, the Top-spec fluid models gain the familiar family face, with LED daytime running lights integrated into the new Chrome Grille, fog lamps and colour-coded bumpers and door handles and 15-inch alloy wheels. The Motion derivatives adopt a black grille and trim for the side mirrors while sporting smaller 14-inch wheels on the top-spec 1.0Litre Fluid with 14-inch alloys on the rest of the motion range.

2020 Hyundai Grand i10: Safety

The new Grand i10 comes standard with dual front airbags, ISOFIX child seat attachments at the rear, ABS and EBD. The Global NCAP Crash rating sits a lowly 2-stars but still higher than many of the vehicles it competes with within its class.

2020 Hyundai Grand i10: Driving Dynamics

On offer the Grand i10 range offers the choice of two engines, a 1litre 3-cylinder and a 1.2litre 4-banger, offering 49kw and 94Nm and 61kW and 144Nm respectively. Both engines are paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox or in the case of the 1.2litre; there is the choice of a 4-speed automatic. At launch, the chance to drive the top-spec Fluid 1.0 manual meant the pleasant dynamics and the peppy engine allowed the Grand i10’s character to shine through. Its no N product so, time is needed to get the car going, but once on the move, the drive is pleasant and doesn’t require too much downshifting to keep the engine on the boil. The NVH is rather impressive, and the typical effortless drive is to be expected from the Hyundai products of late. A more realistic 6.4litres/100 was achieved on the combined cycle, and it was a rather fantastically charismatic car and fits snuggly in the segment.
